Chetana Vikas, Kolhapur

Established in 1986 in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, Chetana Apangmati Vikas Sanstha began with minimal resources, starting a special school, "Chetana Vikas Mandir," for intellectually disabled children aged 6 to 18. From a garage space with 20 students and two staff, we now serve 110 students.

In 1998, we launched our "Vocational Training Centre" for the trainees above 18. At present we provide training for 110 trainees in various trades..

Today, Chetana Vikas supports over 220+ beneficiaries with qualified teachers, dedicated teaching staff, committed auto-rickshaw drivers, and active parents.

Usually, Special Child undergoes IQ (Intelligence Quotient) test, which is used to estimate cognitive functioning. Lower IQ scores are associated with higher levels of intellectual disability with poor adaptive functioning (daily life skills, communication, social behavior, etc.). IQ alone doesn't determine disability percentage—it’s part of a multidimensional assessment.

Mild, Moderate, Severe and Profound are the major categories of Intellectual Disability. Special children with ID below 40% are not entitled to avail government scheme benefits.
